The Fessenden School co-ed, a la carte summer academic program is for Fessenden students and children in the surrounding communities entering grades 4-9. All courses will be taught by experienced Fessenden faculty and are designed to strengthen the foundations of language and math; encourage exploration and interactive learning with science, social studies, and music; and nurture creative expression through video, poetry, books, and art.
Each interactive and comprehensive class will meet for almost 3 hours each day which allows for a variety of instructional methods and activities. Courses all include time to enjoy a catered lunch and a group activity. A light snack will be provided mid-morning and mid-afternoon. Morning courses run from 8:50 AM - 11:45 PM and afternoon courses run from 1:00 - 3:45 PM. Parents may select from courses that vary in length from one week to three weeks in subject areas, such as science, languages, team building, social studies, arts, Language Arts, music, and math. Each class is limited to ten students to encourage meaningful learning experiences. |
1-Week Courses ($350 each)  World Percussion (Gr. 4-9) - Morning, July 9-13 Learn about the world's rhythms through percussion in this one-week course. Take a musical journey through South America and Africa using the power of your hands. Understand the language of rhythm and beat in a drumming circle! Finish the week with a performance at lunch with your fellow students and teachers as your audience. |

 Mega-Science (Gr. 4-9) - Afternoon, July 9-13 Consumer and Kitchen Science: Test common household products to determine which works best in different applications. Test anything from soda to hockey tape to find the best product. Using safe, household chemicals, conduct amazing experiments such as giant bubbles, baking soda volcanoes, tie-dye jello, bubble gum and soda. Discuss the properties and elements of experiments. Simply wonder and create possibilities using safe materials.
Egyptology: Indiana Jones beware! Learn about pharaohs and King Tut and experiment with mummification. Write and decipher hieroglyphics.
Watershed Ecology: Experience an outdoor classroom on the Charles River. Take water samples and explore the biology of this vibrant eco-system from swans to single cell creatures. |

 Modern Dance Technique and Jazz Movement with Improvisation (Gr. 4-9) - Afternoon, July 9-13 This week long course will focus on modern dance and jazz techniques supplemented by fun improvisational games. Both outdoors and indoors, this class will allow students to learn techniques of suspension, release and isolation; spatial awareness; rhythmic perception; and performance expression. Anatomy coloring books will be used to provide an understanding for the muscle groups functioning in jazz and modern dance techniques. Students will also be provided with the tools to work on their own dance compositions to culminate in a choreography showcase on the last day of the class. |

 Art Design: Drawing, Painting and Fashion Design (Gr. 4-9) - Morning, July 16-20 Become the next Monet, Van Gogh, or Vera Wang. Using various media (photo, still-life, literary prompt, nature, etc.), create canvases filled with your creations and review different fashion design elements based on individual creation, fashion artists, and visual media.

 Acting Shakespeare (Gr. 7-9) - Afternoon, July 16-20 This week-long acting workshop will help your child tap into his or her inner creativity through the works of the Bard himself. Each day will start off with general acting games designed to get the students warmed up (voice, movement, teamwork, etc), before moving onto the lesson of the day, such as clowning, drama, improvisation, or the rudiments of stage combat. The students will then integrate these new skills into appropriate monologues and scenes from Shakespeare. As the week progresses, the students will pick a particular piece on which they want to work and they will perform in a mini "exhibition" to close the class! Students will gain confidence, self-awareness and language skills in this supportive and fun environment. |

 Ballet and Pilates with Improvisation (Gr. 4-9) - Afternoon, July 16-20  This week long course will focus on ballet and Pilates supplemented by fun improvisational games.   Sport Science and Conditioning (Gr. 6-9) - Afternoon, July 23-27 Work toward a common goal with respect and compassion for community members through various physical activities, tasks and reflections. Sports science: Learn about nutrition, physiology, and body mechanics. At the same time, get ready for your fall sport of choice with conditioning (cardiovascular, full body conditioning, and weight training). Activities will build up as the week progresses from simple tasks to ones with greater complexity, all the while maintaining the integrity of a common goal.
