Fall '14 Sports Highlights

11/13/2014
Each year, fall sports give way to Mud Week—a time between seasonal sports when boys can partake in a range of fun, informal activities. It is a time when Fessenden coaches and athletes breathe a collective sigh after a season of highs, lows, elation, and disappointment, and reflect on the season that has just unfolded.

This year, Fessenden athletes accomplished major feats, whether they were reflected on the stats sheet or not. The following highlights are just a few of the exciting things that happened this fall on the athletic fields.

Varsity Soccer
Fessenden’s varsity soccer team had a season for the books. The boys finished with an undefeated record of 12-0-1.

Key victories for Fessenden included wins over Belmont Hill (twice), Cardigan Mountain, and junior varsity high school teams from Newton South and Rivers. Fessy finished as the runner-up at the New England Junior Prep Championships, but fell short to Eaglebrook in the finals during a penalty-kick shootout.

This year’s team boasted a tremendously diverse roster of boys from nine different countries including Ghana, Mexico, Zimbabwe, Bermuda, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and the United States.

Varsity Football
Last year’s football team graduated a number of Upper School students who were major contributors to the team's success. Despite the loss of talent, this year’s team was stacked with a crop of promising young athletes. With only 18 boys on the roster, 15 of whom are eighth graders, the team went 3-3-1 while playing older and often bigger competitors.

This season’s highlights included victories over Fay, Fenn, and Roxbury Latin. Head coaches Steve Cincotta and Jake Gurley remarked that the team made “tremendous strides in both technique and toughness” throughout the fall.

JV "B" (Sixth Grade) Soccer
This year, the JV “B” team was able to defended their title in the Sixth Grade Soccer Tournament for the third consecutive year. Competing against athletes from Tenacre, Park, and Fay, Fessenden’s 26-athlete roster collectively contributed to the win. Head coaches Greg Hendrick, Dave Banister, and Katie O’Hara were impressed with the teamwork that was displayed all year.

Cub Flag Football
Fessenden’s club flag football team completed their second year of competition with 35 participants. The success of the program prompted other schools to start teams. Fessenden competed in games with Belmont Day School and Rectory as well as a series of intramural Red & Gray Games.
