Fessenden Student Competes in National Basketball Showcase

10/7/2014
This past weekend, 64 of the nation’s top freshmen, sophomore and junior basketball players descended upon New York City to participate in the Jim Couch National Training Showcase presented by Combinator Magazine. The event benefits the Jim Couch Foundation’s Free Basketball Conditioning and Fitness Clinic programming. Among those invited to participate in this prestigious event was Fessenden’s own ninth grade Isaiah M., who was one of 20 nationally ranked freshmen chosen to play in this showcase game.

The Super 16 National Training Showcase celebrates the career of Mr. Jim Couch, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s first coach. This showcase honors Couch’s work in the New York City community as a leader and innovator of basketball training and mentorship. This event is an evolution: its genesis comes from the 2007 Jim Couch Reunion Games that featured the NBA’s Kemba Walker and Tobias Harris as headliners; the 2008 Girls High School game featuring the best of Westchester vs. the best of New York City Metro; the 2009 expansion that included regional teams from Boston, Connecticut, Albany, and New Jersey; and the 2010 Freshman Game that featured the top ninth graders from the New York Metro region vs. Long Island’s top entering freshman.

Isaiah, a 6’ 5” guard/forward from East Patchogue, N.Y., came to Fessenden last year and was the only eighth grader to start alongside four extremely talented freshmen. The 2013-14 Varsity Basketball team was one of the most heralded squads in the school’s history, and was the first team to represent Fessenden at the highly competitive Boy’s Club Future Stars Tournament in New York City (finishing in third place amongst some of the strongest teams in the country). Isaiah will anchor an athletic 2014-15 Fessenden Varsity team, which returns three players from last year’s squad and several promising newcomers.
