National Scholastic Recognizes Fessenden Second Grader and His Family

5/29/2012
Second grader Maxwell Surprenant and his family have been named Runners Up in the National Scholastic Magazine "Family of the Year" contest.

The contest honors families who have made a commitment and given of themselves to their community. Maxwell was honored for his work with his family's "Catching Joy" organization. He participates in eight events each month, doing set-up, clean-up, leading the event, making posters and writing thank you notes. The Surprenant family will be highlighted in the June issue of Scholastic Parent and Child magazine which has over 8 million subscribers.

As one of two Runners Up, Maxwell received a $1000 college savings bond and $1000 worth of books to donate to an organization of his choice. He chose to make his donation to Fessenden and recently gave a brief presentation in the dining hall, honoring Headmaster David Stettler, Lower School Head Wendy Pearre, and all of the Lower School Faculty especially his teacher Lauren Widing and Lower School Librarian Elizabeth Kiley.

Congratulations to Maxwell and the Surprenant family on their achievement!

Well done and well deserved! To give hundreds of hours every year volunteering to help others is remarkably generous.
