Sixth Grade Students Host Geography Expo

11/14/2014
Recently, sixth grade entrepreneurs invited parents, faculty, and staff to a Geography Expo—the culmination of a month-long project that included hard work in fabrication, research, creativity, and the art of persuasive language.

In this project, students were tasked with synthesizing information they've learned about geography in Mr. Pepi’s and Mr. Beatty’s classes, and creating imaginary countries that would attract an abundance of new citizens. Students were required to submit comprehensive proposals, which were subject to critique and approval, and various visual representations of their countries. Each student was also assigned to compose and record a national anthem that highlighted special features and benefits of their country. Most recently, boys spent several class periods developing pitches, which were delivered at last week's Expo in the hopes of attracting new citizens.

In this iterative process, boys worked to shift from presentation mode to pitch with the help of a formal Feedback Workshop. Faculty members critiqued all aspects of the pitch, focusing on everything from actual content to delivery style.

Finally, students completed a rubric-based self-assessment, which focused on their project experience in communication, collaboration, self-reliance, and time management. The Expo was enjoyed by faculty, parents, and students alike.
