Students Participate in Statewide Coastal Cleanup Event

10/17/2014
During Morning Meeting, in front of a crowd of seventh and eighth grade boys, Upper School Head Todd Eveleth held a sheet of paper in one hand. On it was a reflection written by an eighth grade student after spending the day cleaning trash and debris from a local New England beach.

“I realized just how much this generation has to clean up in order to have a clean and healthy planet,” the reflection began. “I think that there should be a law that, for two days out of the year, requires everybody to take part in cleaning up the earth. It wouldn't be a big nuisance to people but it would have an astronomically positive impact on our planet.”

This week, Upper School students traveled to Crane Beach, Winthrop Beach, Nahant Beach, and the Charles River in Watertown for an environmental volunteer program called COASTSWEEP. Through this program, volunteers collect marine debris—trash, fishing line, and any other human-made items—and record what they find. This information is then analyzed by the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management (CZM) and used to identify sources of marine debris and develop education and policy initiatives to help reduce it. A total of 1,965 items were collected by Fessenden students this week.

Fessenden’s dedication to service learning aims to foster a commitment to bettering the school community and its local and global communities through work and service to others. An emphasis is placed on social and environmental responsibility.
