A competitive program for grades 7-9. Tryouts will determine a limited roster of up to 8 players. Practice and play will take place on local courses with Leo J. Martin Memorial being the primary course. A schedule of 4-6 matches will take place against other local private schools in the area.
The Fessenden team defeated Thayer by a score of 7-1 yesterday to conclude their schedule. Individual matches were won by Brian L., Cooper S., Leo S., Henry G., David S., Claude S. and Theodore K. Several of the matches were dominated from the outset, however I'm particularly proud of David and Claude who hung tough through the final hole to deliver a victory for the Fessenden team.
Earlier in the season the Fessenden golf team defeated St. Sebastian's, but in the rematch the team fell by a score of 4.5 to 1.5. Leo S. was the only Fessenden player to win his individual match, while Brian L. managed to tie his match with some strong play over the final few holes. All of the remaining matches were close, but Claude S., Oscar Z., Cooper S., and Tyler C. fell short despite some strong play on the Ponkapoag course.
Yesterday the golf team had the good fortune to play the Middlesex School at Concord CC, the home of the 2022 Massachusetts Amateur golf tournament. It was a real treat for the team to be able to play such a terrific golf course, and I believe the boys enjoyed themselves. A few of them struggled with the fast pace of the greens, but I was proud of the way they played against a high school aged team.
Several of our top players got the team off to a strong start. Brian L. and Henry G. played well to secure wins in very close matches. And Cooper S. also won his match, which was the marquee pairing of the day since he was playing former Fessenden student, and two year member of the golf team, Andrew V. Cooper and Andrew know each other well and have played a decent amount of golf together over the past few years. Cooper closed out the match on the 8th hole and then finished with a beautiful birdie on the final hole. Leo S., David S., Oscar Z., Claude S. and Tyler C. did not win their matches, but gained invaluable experience out on the course.
While the Fessenden golf team defeated St. Sebastian's 3.5 to 2.5, today was more than just a victory for the team. These competitions are comprised of individual matches, with six of them taking place this afternoon. Each match has it's own ebb and flow over nine holes. Sometimes these are close matches that go down to the final hole, and sometimes they are one-sided and can be won/lost quickly.
Brian L. and Leo S. were matched up against the top two St. Sebastian's members, and both won their matches fairly easily. Henry G. kept his composure during some confusion when his golf ball could not be found after a solid shot, and managed to tie his match. I know that David S. is disappointed with the end result of his match, but his half point earned for a tie was critically important in the team victory. David started off strong and won the majority of the early holes. Unfortunately, his opponent (who happened to be a former Fessenden student) played well enough to salvage a tie in their match. Matt B. was involved in a back and forth match the entire way, but he won the final hole to salvage yet another critical half point for the team. Theodore K. played well but came up just short in his match. However, Theodore had the shot of the day when he chipped in the hole from well off the 7th green.
We are extremely proud of the way the boys handled themselves on the course today, and hopefully they learned some valuable lessons - from their own matches as well as those of their teammates!
The Fessenden golf team enjoyed a beautiful afternoon on the Connecticut National golf course, and defeated the team from Rectory by a 4.5 to 1.5 score. Individual matches were won by Cooper S., Henry G. and Tyler C. - while matches were tied by Brian L., Oscar Z. and Claude S.
