Game 3 against Fay was an even, competitive match between two teams who played with consistent effort, intelligence and poise, eventually ending in a 2-2 tie after three periods plus 5 additional minutes of overtime. In the opening minutes Fessy maintained possession in the offensive end, generating several quality scoring changes. But Fay’s goalie was equal to the task and kept the game scoreless. During this time Nolan E. and Liam G. played pivotal roles both defending and setting up clean defense-to-offense transitions. Lucas L., Alex. R. and Ben. F also contributed in a significant role playing critical minutes on the blue line, and exhibiting sound decision-making while forechecking and defending. Scoreless after the first period, Fay capitalized on a face-off win and deke move, opening the scoring halfway through the 2nd period. The ensuing play featured creative offense at both ends, with several noteworthy chances coming from “low-to-high” passes to Alex. M., Phin H., Nolan E. and Liam G. at their point positions. Despite generating sustained offense and chances, the puck still hadn’t found its way into the back of the Fay net. That finally changed with 2 minutes left in the second period when Phin H. took control of the puck in the neutral zone, skated across the red line, then passed to Kota S. on the left who carried the puck into the offensive zone and shot from the top of the left circle. The puck deflected off a Fay defender and over to Phin H. who quickly snapped the puck into the net before the goaltender could adjust. But the 1-1 score would not last long, as Fay regained the lead one minute later. The score would remain 2-1 through most of the 3rd period, but Fessy, once again, tied the game with 4:30 left in regulation on a play that began in the defensive zone. Neil W. won the defensive zone face-off and created space for Phin H. to set up a breakout. Phin's pass to Will G. on the right boards was quickly redirected by Will to Neil W who accelerated through the neutral zone and into the offensive zone, splitting the Fay defensemen and deking the goalie for the tying goal. The 3rd period ended without any further scoring, and an additional 5-minutes of spirited play in overtime did not settle the game in favor of either team. Thus, game 3 ended in a 2-2 tie, a fitting end to a game played by two well matched teams.
Game 2 at Rivers School was a closely contested, fast-paced contest in which the Fessy Varsity team played well from the outset, yet still found itself down 1-0 after a Rivers power-play goal midway through the 1st period. For much of the remainder of the 1st Rivers continued to apply pressure and generate offensive opportunities, but stellar goaltending by Finn D., including a highlight reel glove save, kept the score close. In the 2nd period Rivers converted a nifty “no-look” pass for a 2-0 lead. But Fessy answered on the ensuing shift when Alex M. carried the puck into the offensive zone, sent a cross-ice pass to Neil W. who deked around a defender and scored on a quick backhand shot for Fessenden’s first goal. Now 2-1, the play for the remainder of the 2nd period was closely contested, with quality scoring chances at each end met by equally strong goaltending. The 3rd period started in similar “up and down” fashion but at the mid-way part Jack S. rounded the Fessy net, delivered a perfect “stretch pass” to Max L. for a breakaway. A good save on Max’s initial deke move left the puck loose in the slot which Jack, hustling up ice to support the rush, promptly buried in the net, tying the game with 7 minutes left to play. Both teams traded chances in the latter stages of the 3rd period, including a Rivers power-play in the final minute and a Fessy shorthanded chance just before time expired. Final score: 2-2, a well-played game by two well-matched teams.
The Fessenden Varsity Hockey team started the season with a strong start-to-finish effort against a formidable St. Sebs team. Early in the first period St. Sebs generated several scoring chances, all of which were turned aside by Finn D. leaving few second chance opportunities. The sustained pressure from St. Sebs led to a Fessy penalty, but on the ensuing penalty kill Neil W. intercepted a pass, raced down the ice on a breakaway, and buried a “shorty” to open the scoring. For the remainder of the 1st period, and for much of the 2nd, the play was up and down, evenly contested in every zone. During this time, the blue line of Alex R., Ben F., and Aiden D. forechecked cohesively and defended in the defensive zone in a manner rarely seen so early in a season. The score remained 1-0 until the latter stages of the 2nd, when Alex M. scored to extend the lead, and then shortly thereafter scored again. Early in the 3rd period, with the score 3-0 Max L. took a pass from Phin H. in the right circle and fired a shot, generating a rebound that Jack S. promptly backhanded in for a 4-0 lead. But Sebs is a good team, and eventually they broke through with 2 quick goals and still plenty of time left. Over the next few minutes both teams continued to generate chances but strong defense at both ends limited opportunities. As time wound down Fessy’s defensemen (Phin H., Alex M., Bill G. and Nolan E.) were instrumental in keeping the puck to the outside in addition to initiating clean transitions up ice. Near the 2-minute mark Neil W. and Kota S. broke into the offensive zone, 2-on-1, with Kota converting a nice feed from Neil to make the score 5-2, the eventual final score. When the clock ticked down to 0:00 the boys, in celebration, jumped over the boards to mob Finn D. before lining up to shake hands with St. Sebs.
