Our admissions processes and timelines vary slightly by entry grade. For specific application details, please select the entry grade for which you are applying. To receive more information about Fessenden, please complete a Pre-K - Grade 4 Inquiry Form or a Grade 5-9 Inquiry Form. If you are ready to begin your application process, Apply Now!

Pre-K - Grade 4 Application Guidelines

  • Pre-K

    Students entering Pre-Kindergarten should be 4 years old by September 1.

    Fessenden’s Pre-K program recognizes each boy’s unique learning style and developmental stage. The following offerings are available. (Note that parents do not need to select an option until their child receives an offer of admission.)
    • Full-Day Pre-K Option
    • Blended Pre-K Option (two full days, three half days)
    • Half-Day Pre-K Option
    1. Parents submit the online inquiry form and call the admissions office at (617) 630-2300 to schedule a parental campus visit and a small group visit for their son. Campus visits begin after October 1. All parental visits must be completed by February 1.
    2. Pre-Kindergarten candidates are required to attend a small group visit day in December or January with approximately eight other boys. These group visits are conducted by members of our Admissions team and teachers. They provide your son with an opportunity to listen to a story, play and interact with peers. This visit lasts about two hours. Representatives from our Parents' Association will be available to share their experiences and answer questions while your son participates in his visit. 
    3. Complete our online application and parent questionnaire with $50 application fee through your Ravenna account (required and due by February 1).
    4. Submit Transcript Release Form - available on Ravenna - to current school so they can forward school transcripts or progress reports (required and due by February 1).
    5. By December 1, provide your son's current teacher with the electronic student evaluation form available on Ravenna (required and due by February 1).
    6. To be considered for financial assistance, please submit your application and supporting documentation by February 1.
    Once all of the above steps are taken, the candidate’s application is considered complete. The Admissions Committee will begin to review completed applications on February 1, and a decision will be sent to parents in writing on March 10.

    Applications completed after February 1 will be considered on a rolling basis based on availability. Please contact Admissions for more information about availability and the second round admissions process. Please note that to be fair to all candidates, applications received after the February 1 deadline will be considered only after initial decisions are made on March 10. 
  • Kindergarten

    Students entering Kindergarten should be 5 years old by September 1.

    1. Parents submit the online inquiry form and call the admissions office at (617) 630-2300 to schedule a parental campus visit and a one-on-one and small group visit for their son. Campus visits begin after October 1. 

    2. Kindergarten candidates are required to attend a group visit day in December or January with approximately eight other boys. These group visits are conducted by members of our admissions team and teachers. They provide your son with an opportunity to listen to a story, play and interact with peers.  This visit lasts about an hour and a half and representatives from our Parents' Association are available to share their experiences and answer questions while your son participates in his visit.

  • Grades 1-3

    Grades 1-3 are not typical entry points for Fessenden. However, there are occasional openings so we encourage you to begin the admissions process.
    1. Parents submit the online inquiry form and call the admissions office at (617) 630-2300 to schedule a parental campus visit. Campus visits begin after October 1. 

    2. Schedule a candidate visit. Each candidate will visit a classroom and experience a typical day in the life of a Fessenden student. The visit will also include an individual assessment with a member of our Lower School Admissions team. Dress code for Grade 1 visitors is a collared shirt, chino/khaki pants and sneakers; coat, tie, chino/khaki pants, and non-sneaker shoes for Grades 2 and 3.

    3. Complete our online application and parent questionnaire with $50 application fee on Ravenna (required and due by February 1).

    4. Submit Transcript Release Form - available on Ravenna - to current school so they can forward school transcripts or progress reports (required and due by February 1).

    5. By December 1, provide your son's current teacher with the appropriate student evaluation form (Grade 1 evaluation form or Grades 2-5 evaluation form - available on Ravenna)- required and due by February 1.

    6. To be considered for financial assistance, please submit your application and supporting documentation by February 1.

  • Grade 4

During the visit parent(s) and candidate tour the campus. Following the tour, parent(s) will meet with a member of the Lower School Admissions team while the candidate completes an individual assessment. Campus visits begin after October 1. Candidate dress code for the visit is a collared shirt, chino/khaki pants, and sneakers.

    2. 4th Grade candidates must participate in a group visit day in December or January with approximately ten other boys. These group visits are conducted by members of our admissions team and teachers. They provide your son with an opportunity to engage in a variety of activities with peers and gain a sense of the Fessenden student experience. This visit lasts about two hours. Representatives from our Parents' Association will be available to share their experiences and answer questions while your son participates in his visit. Dress code for the visit is a collared shirt, chino/khaki pants, and sneakers.

    Please note, we are not accepting Grade 8 Day applications for the 2022-2023 academic year. 

    1. Create a Ravenna Account and Submit an Inquiry Form
    Establish an account on Ravenna, our online application management system. Once your account is created, complete an inquiry form to start the application process.

    2. Parent & Candidate Campus Tour & Interview
    Campus visits begin after October 12 and are a required part of the application process. Visit Ravenna after October 8 to schedule your tour and interview.

    3. Online Application
    The online application and parent statement, available on Ravenna, are due by February 1. 

    4. Testing
    SSAT or ISEE are optional.

    5. Transcripts
    The transcript record release form is available on Ravenna to download, sign, and submit to the candidate’s current school. The school must upload prior and current year transcripts to Ravenna or email them directly to the Admissions Office, at admissions@fessenden.org, by February 1.

    6. Teacher Evaluation Form
    After December 1, please provide current teachers with the grade-appropriate student evaluation form available on Ravenna. Evaluations are confidential and the teacher/school must upload the forms to Ravenna or email them directly to the Admissions Office, at admissions@fessenden.org,  by February 1.

    7. Grades 5 & 6 Candidate Assessment Morning
    Candidates for Grades 5 and 6 are required to attend an on-campus, admissions assessment on Saturday morning, February 5, 9:00 -11:00  a.m. 

    8. Financial Aid Requests
    The deadline for financial aid applications is February 1. For more financial aid details, visit fessenden.org/financialaid

    Once all of the above steps are taken, the candidate’s application is considered complete. The Admissions Committee will review completed applications after February 1, and a decision will be posted to your Ravenna account on March 10.

  • Grades 5-9 Domestic Boarding Students

    5-9 DOMESTIC BOARDING KEY APPLICATION STEPS & DATES 

      • Domestic boarding applications are considered on a rolling basis. However, if you would like to be considered for financial assistance, applications must be completed by February 1.
      • Both, Five-Day and Seven-Day boarding options are available for domestic boarding candidates.

  • Grades 5-9 International Boarding Students


    5-9 INTERNATIONAL BOARDING KEY APPLICATION STEPS & DATES 

      • Seven-Day Boarding is the only option for international boarding students.
      • International applications are due December 15, and decisions are communicated on January 15. If you would like to be considered for admission after January 15, please contact our Admissions Office for availability.

    1. Create a Ravenna Account and Submit an Inquiry Form
    Establish an account on Ravenna, our online application management system. Once your account is created, complete an inquiry form to start the application process.

    2. Parent & Candidate Campus Tour & Interview
    Campus visits begin after October 12 and are a required part of the application process. Visit Ravenna after October 8 to schedule your tour and interview.

    3. Online Application
    Complete the online application and parent statement, available on Ravenna, by December 15.

    4. Testing
    Candidates are required to submit TOEFL Jr. test results prior to scheduling an interview. SSAT, ISEE, or WISC-V test results are also welcome in addition to TOEFL Jr.

    5. Transcripts
    The transcript record release form is available on Ravenna to download, sign, and submit to the candidate’s current school. The school must upload prior and current year transcripts to Ravenna or email them directly to the Admissions Office at admissions@fessenden.org by December 15.

    6. Teacher Evaluation Form
    Please provide current teachers with the grade-appropriate student evaluation form available on Ravenna. Evaluations are confidential and the teacher/school must upload the forms to Ravenna or email them directly to the Admissions Office, at admissions@fessenden.org, by December 15.

    Applications for the first round of international admissions are due December 15 and a decision will be posted to your Ravenna account on January 15.

    If you would like to be considered for the second round of international admissions, please contact our office for deadline information. Also, space availability in Grades 8 and 9 is often limited, so please contact us before starting the application process for those grades.
