Mud Week Community Service Trips

After the end of each sports season, Fessenden offers an after-school program called "Mud Week," during which Middle and Upper School boys participate in alternative activities. Students choose their activities each day, and they may opt to play sports or other games, join community service trips, or spend extra time in study hall. At the end of this season, students have had the opportunity to attend a different community service trip each day, organized by Middle School Service Learning Coordinator and Spanish Teacher Alyssa Hansen.

On Tuesday, Middle School boys traveled to BINA Farm, which brings together individuals with and without disabilities using equine therapy. The boys learned about the farm's mission and did some manual labor to help the farm. On Wednesday and Thursday, Middle and Upper School boys traveled to homes in the Newton area to assist Newton At Home, an organization that helps elderly Newton residents continue to live at home. The boys completed yard work and raked leaves for elderly Newton residents. On Friday, a group of 10 Middle School boys are traveling to Family Table, a kosher food pantry located in Waltham. The group will be preparing for the Sunday distribution. They will be counting out items, organizing the pantry, and sorting donations. On Monday, students will travel to the Newton Food Pantry, a food pantry in Newton that provides food and personal care items to residents in need. The boys will be organizing items and stocking shelves. Boys have been collecting food and non-food donation items to bring to the pantry.
