Fessenden Announces Two Administrative Appointments

A Message From Head of School Steve Armstrong

I am writing to share news about the appointment of two Fessenden administrators, to begin July 1, 2019. Cindy Metsch will serve as our one-year Assistant Head of School. Marissa Apland will join Fessenden as Director of Arts and Vocal Music Teacher.

Cindy Metsch was a member of the Fessenden faculty from 1990 until her retirement in 2018. During her years here she served in a number of leadership capacities and as an English teacher. Her most recent administrative role was four years as Director of Curriculum and Learning, and prior to that she worked eight years as Head of Upper School and 12 as Chair of the English department. Cindy was also a respected member of the residential faculty throughout her years here. There are few Fessy faculty, current or past, who have given as much to the School as has Cindy, and who garner such universal respect from the community. We are fortunate to have Cindy as Assistant Head for the 2019-20 school year and as we conduct a nationwide search for our permanent Assistant Head of School.

Additionally, I am excited to announce the appointment of Marissa Apland as Director of Arts and Vocal Music Teacher. Marissa will lead the visual and performing arts faculty as the program continues to grow and evolve in the new William R. Elfers ’63 Center for the Arts. I would like to thank the faculty, staff, administrators, and parents who participated in this search process.

Marissa will come to us from Chase Collegiate School, a pre-kindergarten through grade 12 school in Waterbury, Connecticut, where she has been teaching for over 10 years. As Choral and Music Director, Lower School Music Teacher, and Private Vocal Instructor, she works with students of all ages, both one-on-one and in groups. An artist in her own right, Marissa is an accomplished vocalist, and she performs opera and sings in concerts along the East Coast. She earned both her Master of Music and Bachelor of Music in Classical Vocal Performance from Manhattan School of Music. Over the summer, Marissa will move onto our campus with her husband and two children. In addition, her older son will become a Fessy boy in September.

Please join me in welcoming Cindy Metsch and Marissa Apland to the Fessenden community.

Sincerely,

Steve Armstrong
Head of School
