Fessenden held the eighth grade farewell dinner and ceremony on Monday, June 3, 2019 in the Class of 1985 Auditorium. The ceremony honored both the boys who will be attending new schools in the fall, and the returning students who will serve as the School’s ninth grade leaders next year.
Head of Upper School Jason Lewis opened the ceremony and addressed the eighth grade students as they sat together as a group for the last time. Reflecting on the year, he shared, “Taking a step back and thinking about just how much you have done and accomplished over the last year is remarkable.” After sharing memories of the class with the boys’ parents and other guests, he encouraged the eighth graders to connect with others throughout their lives, “particularly those who carry different perspectives and stories.” Jason’s remarks were followed by readings and musical performances by select students.
Eighth grade class deans Maura Chapman and Art Beauregard offered encouraging words to the departing eighth graders and recalled the themes of kindness and gratitude through memories of the whole class from the school year. Lastly, Maura and Art acknowledged four members of the class who were voted by their peers to serve as class agents in coming years. Fessenden class agents help alumni stay connected both to each other and to the School. The agents for this group are Carter Bartel, Josh Cameron, Jack Patel, and Asad Syed.
Finally, Head of School Steve Armstrong encouraged the boys returning to Fessenden to think about their personal goals for the year ahead, and he advised the boys departing to, “Remember the lessons you’ve learned here—both those that are academic and those that are about character, sportsmanship, and effort.” Steve celebrated all eighth graders for being a wonderful group, and for making the community a rewarding place.
Also during the ceremony, faculty and staff recognized the accomplishments of all the eighth graders, as well as the recipients of a number of prizes (listed below). Certificates were presented, and the evening concluded after the class deans handed out gifts to the departing boys.
