Varsity Basketball Wins NYC Boy’s Club Rising Stars Tournament
The Varsity Basketball team traveled to Suffield Academy on Sunday to compete in the prestigious NYC Boy’s Club Rising Stars Tournament and came away with the Championship trophy. Fessenden played 4 games on the day and bested all their opponents including a finals victory over perennial power Rectory. The Bears opened up the tourney with a team victory over Indian Mt. School by the score of 45-28.... where all players saw quality playing time. Ten players on the roster registered points in this contest with Asad S. leading the way with 10 points. Fessy followed this game with a dominant team effort over the Brooklyn Kings behind a suffocating defense and high percentage shooting performance. The Bears jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 63-39 victory. Josh C. And Jeremiah J. led the way scoring 18 and 16 points each. The win propelled Fessy to the semifinal game against the NYC Boy’s Club All Stars. The team road another solid defensive effort and a red hot shooting performance by Jeremiah J. (27 points) to cruise to a 45-27 victory......and a ticket to the tournament championship game. The championship game pitted the two anticipated rivals (Fessenden and Rectory) going head to head in the finals. The Bears were thwarted last year because of injuries the opportunity to face the defending champs from Rectory in this game and were excited to have another shot at them this season. Tired but determined, Fessy jumped out to an early 14 point lead but Rectory would not let them pull away and cut the lead to 9 just before the half. The Bears took control again in the second half, but once again Rectory hit shots to keep it close. Finally Fessy road the clock and some free throw shooting down the stretch to a 55-40 victory. Once again Jeremiah J. had the hot hand with 20 points and 6 steals. Special props go out to our returning 9th grade captains Josh C. (13 points 7 rebounds) and Asad S. (10 points 3 assists).......and the only other returner Idrissa B. (6 rebounds, 4 points) for their leadership and maturity on and off the court in setting an example for their teammates throughout the day. It was a fantastic day of basketball and a memorable outcome for the entire team.
