Varsity Squash Takes Down Groton in First Match in Almost 2 Years!
Coach Welty
The Varsity Boys took on a formidable, older Groton JV team. Playing boys a few years older and in some cases twice the height, our crew showed an extremely impressive resolve and toughness. 5 of our 12 matches went to five games, with us winning four of those. Beating a group of high schoolers is never anything to sneeze at!
Nate L. and Aydin B. got us started with big five game wins, setting the tone for the day ahead. Both pushed through difficult obstacles, with Nate clinging to an early lead and Aydin battling back and forth each game. William X., Andre Z. and Peter D. showcased our depth by cruising to easy wins to bolster our lead, after which Wakeman G. and Matias Y. had two additional hard fought five-gamers - Wakeman pulling ahead 12-10 in his fifth game. While Zane O., Evan H., Alan T., and Martin Y. couldn't quite hang on, they fought hard and showed a solid grasp of the fundamentals we have discussed early on.
The match of the day, though, goes to Alexander Yang. Alexander, playing a friend from Shanghai, fought through the unique struggle of trying to catch his breath through a mask. His match ultimately went 55 (!) minutes and in a tense sequence at the very end, pulled out a 16-14 victory in the fifth game. This, in front of a packed home crowd.
I am incredibly impressed with the Varsity team's first effort this year. It didn't seem like they had missed almost two years of competitive play!
Great to see old Fessy friend (now on Groton's team) Jiwoo Han! See below for full match results.
