Close Matches Almost Enough to Push Past SquashBusters
Coach Welty
SquashBusters continues to prove they are a formidable opponent, though the overall score looks less lopsided once you dig into the results. While we lost 7-2, all but one match went to at least four games, with many of those games decided by three or fewer points. Additionally, we had a few boys out with COVID, and others returning from recent illnesses or quarantines. Suffice to say, there was some rust to shake off.
The two matches of the day belong to Wakeman Gribbell and Alan Tratz. Wakeman lost the first two games and looked to be heading to a quick loss, but then began to limit mistakes and keep points alive long enough for his opponent to get frustrated. After a 11-9 fourth game victory, the floodgates opened and Wakeman won the fifth game 11-1. Excellent comeback, Wakeman!
Alan likewise had an excellent match, trading games back and forth and showing a tenacity and will to win out on court. Though he lost in the fifth 11-9, I'm really proud to see that fight and an ability to grind it out until the very end.
We hope to welcome spectators back to matches next week! Fingers crossed! See full match results below.
