I am pleased to announce the appointment of Sean Guthrie, Fessenden’s current Head of Middle School, as our next Assistant Head of School, beginning July 1, 2022. A broad search, led by consultants Carney Sandoe and a search advisory committee, drew a number of qualified leaders in education. Through the process, Sean emerged as the clear choice to become the next Assistant Head of School, and we are incredibly fortunate to have him transition to this important role in our community.
Since 2019, Sean has been an exceptional leader for the Middle School. He has guided the fifth and sixth grade students, faculty, and staff by encouraging collaboration and teamwork—important tenets of his leadership style. Sean’s focus on relationship building, professional development, and engaging a growth mindset has unified and enriched the Middle School in myriad ways. Prior to coming to Fessenden, he was the Principal of the Young Achievers Science and Math Pilot School in Mattapan, Massachusetts. Sean earned both his Bachelor of Science in Accounting and his Master of Education from Boston College. In addition, last May he was awarded an honorary doctorate from BC. As an undergraduate, Sean was a member of the football team and served as the captain for his senior year, and he later played in the National Football League. During the school year, he can often be found playing flag football with Middle School students at recess. Sean shares, "It is an honor to be appointed as the next Assistant Head of School for Fessenden. Over these past three years, I have been inspired by Middle School students and teachers, and I look forward to working with members of the entire Fessy family.”
At this time, I want to offer sincere appreciation to Cindy Metsch for her leadership as Assistant Head of School since 2019, a position that caps off an extraordinary and lengthy career here at Fessenden. In her 31-year tenure, Cindy has been a fixture of this school, having served as an English teacher, division head, curriculum director, residential administrator, and in so many other significant ways. We are grateful for Cindy’s contributions to the Fessenden community, and she will be missed. Looking ahead, a search for the next Head of Middle School will now begin.
