The Experience

Ciongoli Center for Innovation

With floor-to-ceiling windows, an open-concept studio, and bright splashes of color, it’s safe to say that our Ciongoli Center for Innovation is architecturally striking. But it’s what happens inside the Ciongoli Center that’s truly magic. Whether a venue for coding, tinkering, building, or problem-solving, our state-of-the-art resources combined with an emphasis on project-based learning allows Middle and Upper School students to develop fundamental and technical skills in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM), as well as essential 21st century skills such as creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking.

Unveiled in September 2016, the Ciongoli Center is comprised of 2,400 square feet and is situated at the physical and ideological heart of campus. Equipped with 3D printers, laser cutters, and an array of tools and materials, the Center encompasses three expansive makerspaces, a machine room—affectionately known as “The Shed”—and a collaboration space. The new building is adjacent to our Wheeler Library, creating an impressive addition to our 21st century learning resources and providing an inspiring space for faculty and students to advance research, design thinking, and project-based learning.

CCI Time Lapse

The Ciongoli Center for Innovation can accommodate three different classes simultaneously, enabling teachers to facilitate educational experiences tailored to each grade level. The result is a space that is bursting at the seams with light-bulb moments, successes, failures, and constantly evolving questions, all of which support our iterative learning process. You’ll often see flashing LED lights from the many projects on display, hear the hum of 3D printers, and smell thermoplastic adhesive emanating from a hot glue gun. No matter the project or the tools, students are deeply engrossed in their learning. And with the help of full-time faculty members comprised of a Director of Innovation, an Innovation Coach, an Academic Technology Advocate, and three librarians, this space both embodies and amplifies Fessenden’s dedication to innovation.
