From the first day of Pre-Kindergarten, Fessenden begins to build the academic strengths students need to thrive throughout a rigorous and diverse Pre-K through Grade 9 program, and beyond. Throughout our Lower, Middle and Upper School divisions, we strive to cultivate a love of learning and, as the boys grow older, the increasing discipline and independent study skills necessary to succeed in secondary school and beyond. Important components of our program include helping boys develop the ability to approach study in an organized fashion, meet deadlines and find the right balance between academic and extracurricular activities. Indeed, since its inception in 1903, Fessenden has existed to prepare boys for the challenges that lie ahead.

By emphasizing critical thinking skills throughout the curriculum, we prepare students for life. They will be prepared to find information, evaluate, process and share that information in their growing digital world. Our writing program throughout all divisions begins with planning, the initial step in a writing process that develops excellence in written communication. Since research shows that boys are less likely than girls to become lifelong readers, we encourage reading in a variety of positive ways, beginning with the youngest students. Math curriculum moves from concrete learning for youngest students and, armed with a firm understanding, on to more abstract mathematical concepts. To honor the interests and talents of all students, Fessenden provides a wide variety of extracurricular and leadership opportunities.

All students in Grades 1-9 are required to take five major subjects: English, mathematics, social studies, science, and a foreign language or ESL. Each division has additional course requirements as follows:

Lower School (Pre-K - Grade 4): Art, Music, Computer, Library, Physical Education
Middle School (Grades 5-6): Art, Music elective
Upper School (Grades 7-9): Arts/Music elective, Personal Growth and Development (1 semester/year), Computer elective (1 semester)
